hi. I've been offered a guitar with back/sides made from heavily quilted Spanish Cedar.Have any of you had any experience of this timber used for back/sides,and if so what are your thoughts? The top is flamed redwood...I know the secret is in the bulder and not the timber but.....Any thoughts would be welcome.I've seen flamed Spanish Cedar sets on sale from lmi but that's about it. Thanks Raj ![]() |

Serge DeJonge built an entire guitar out of spanish cedar - everything except the bridge and FB. I think guitargal had it a couple years back, it was all curly. |

Looks like Kenny Hill. Raj, I think Spanish cedar isn't used much for guitar bodies simply because it isn't offered much in appropriate sizes by vendors. SC is much like mahogany in character, but it's a bit lighter in weight and a bit less stiff. It should make a great sounding tonewood, and it would smell incredibly good. |

I have some neck stock and was thinking of cutting some sets too. Just didn't know how well it would be accepted. |

Hi Raj It would certainly make a light instrument. I have never built or seen an instrument with Spanish Cedar back and sides, but I would imagine it would be quite transparent sound wise, due to its lack of density, I guess comparable to a Walnut/Redwood guitar. |

Hmmm....interesting. Spanish Cedar is still relatively cheap and available from my local suppliers. Probably should go sift through the piles. |

I'm thinking that Cedro (Spanish Cedar) in its light weight form is very similar to Black or White Limba in its light weight form. I've some 12/4 Cedro planks in the shop over 22" wide x 12' long. Good solid body guitar bodies and neck stock. I've had fiddleback Cedro, but never seen quilt..gotta be pretty... You can be assured tobacco bugs will not eat your guitar ![]() |
